about

Another borrowed tune, this one originally written by Carlebach for 'Elekha' which is a popular short text (Psalm 30:9,11) often sung during Shabbat - at an after-dinner Tisch, over Se'uda Shlishit on Shabbat afternoon, etc.

This musical setting is structured as three different sections of equal length, so it works well for a single verse of L'kha Dodi flanked by the chorus before and the chorus after. It is ideal for the final, climactic verse, a rousing invitation to the Shabbat bride to come.

The 'Elekha' text is intensely supplicatory, as is this melody. When the final verse of L'kha Dodi is sung in this way, the verse feels like more of a desperate cry for help by the faithful than merely a charming invitation to the Shabbat bride. The final chorus is given a dramatic lift, as if to celebrate triumphantly the anticipated meeting.

The melody has a wide range of pitches, going very low and very high. If those singing have a variety of different vocal ranges, it may be easiest to sing this melody in a key around A or B minor.

The idea of using this 'Elekha' melody for the final verse of L'kha Dodi was introduced by Zach Eilon and Ilan Lazarus. They had the idea while preparing a Qabbalat Shabbat at Kibbutz Hannaton one Friday in July 2009.
