about

An extract from the joyous song that the Bnei Yisrael sang crossing the Sea of Reeds... That story is briefly told after the Shma'. We like to 'enact' it by speaking the narrative and singing the quotations; this tune is great to erupt into as our ancestors did! Sometimes we use the tune heard on track 11 instead. Or even Carlebach's tune (starting at "ha-Ma'ariv Banav").

This song works well fast and upbeat, as if swing or blues. It also works as a slow reggae groove that deepens and gathers energy as the song gets repeated over and over - this is a great one if you're looking for open-ended songs that get the crowd feeling expressive... improvisation over the top of it is recommended, as is clicking and moving around the room, though we've not yet got as far as doing any of those things. In both interpretations, a funky bass-line is mandatory.

Debbie Friedman's original tune uses some sharpened sevenths that fit in with the 'Magen Avot' nusakh of shabbat ma'ariv, but we sing it with everythin' real flat, knowmtalmbout?

Conception (reggae style) inspired by Assa'el Romanelli at Noam.
