about

From album "Precious Tears" (1995) of Montreal-based Shalheves Boys Choir. The yearning melody is sung in many Orthodox circles and beyond, but not many people know who first sang it. At time of writing the original can be heard at www.dailymotion.com/video/xh3bl6_tov-shalheves-boys-choir_music

If you know who composed it, please let us know.

Note on singing the melody: '...U-l'zammer, u-l'zammer, L'SHIMKHA 'ELYON; TOV l'hodot la-shem' ('...to make music for your name, highness; it's good to give thanks to Hashem') - this phrase comes around twice. Most people sing it the same way both times. In the version of the melody we're using, we do sing it that way the second time, but the first time is different: the tune goes downwards on the words in capitals. With this aural expectation set up, the second time feels like a dramatic upward lift leading to the next section: 'to tell of God's chesed in the morning...'
