about

Louis Lewandowski (1821-1894) was a German composer of synagogal music (though born in what is now Poland). Much of his music was written out in full for cantor, choir and organ and his style was influenced by Western European Protestant church music (in keeping with the Jewish tradition of selecting influences from the local musical styles). He also formalised some of the traditional 'nusakh', and often wrote liturgical music within its given nusakh.

We found this fast speed to be conducive to a beautiful flowing feeling - the tune, hence the liturgy, can be a little boring if too slow.

The ardent major-key sound is a little 'out' of the minor-ish nusakh of the surrounding liturgy. This can interrupt the unity and flow of the service, or equally can be a lovely foray that complements the music before and after (e.g. sing this in G major if the surrounding music is in B minor / E minor / B freygish=fiddler-on-the-roof)

Some of us look forward to this as one of our favourite pieces of liturgical music EVER. Some of us feel uncomfortable when singing it in our services because it is so reminiscent of Christian church music; and some of us just don't like that high-church sound. Vive la difference! It's a fascinating debate. If you are/were involved in Gal Chadash, contact us to put your name to one of these! (Obviously what you feel may change over time... but we do remember the vociferous and would love to name you!)
